Selection of School Based Tutor

Over previous years, the Consortium has seen several models for the selection of a School Based Tutor. From experience, we have found the most successful model for the supervision of trainees is one that involves two members of staff – a Senior Manager, acting in a co-ordinating and supervisory role, assisted by a School Based Tutor who will most likely be the immediate Line Manager for the trainee.

The School Based Tutor will deal with the week to week contact with the trainee, including conducting Weekly Review meetings and detailed subject advice, whilst the Senior Manager will be concerned with more strategic issues such as the use of resources and the creation of a Training Plan.

As the programme is flexible to the needs of the trainee and the school, we do not impose any rules for selection.

However, we have found that, for the most beneficial partnership, the School Based Tutor should be:

  • Someone who will work closely with the Trainee
  • Someone with the ability to advise and guide
  • Someone who can take responsibility for guiding the Trainee through their development
  • Someone who can be allowed time to conduct weekly development meetings
  • Someone with a broad school knowledge that can indicate suitable areas for the Trainee to gather experience
  • Someone with sufficient seniority to assist the Trainee to arrange meetings with other staff members
  • Someone who can and will attend Consortium training sessions when requested.
  • Someone who can benefit from the liaison with the Trainee in terms of personal development

We would recommend that the School Based Tutor is the Line Manager, Head of Department or a Class Teacher who can work closely with the Trainee on a regular basis. The process can be overseen by a senior member of staff as a GTP Co-ordinator.
