Role of QA Tutor

The Quality Assurance Tutor’s role is to ensure that the appropriate training takes place within the school that will lead to the trainee achieving QTS within the year.

The QA Tutor will visit the school to monitor the progress of the trainee, address any issues arising with the training or school activities and to advise on the recommendation of the achievement of Qualifier Teacher Status.

The QA Tutor should provide additional support to the trainee where appropriate. However, please note that it is the responsibility of the school and the School Based Tutor to provide the main support.

It is also the role of the QA Tutor to provide training, advice and support to the School Based Tutor to enhance their professional development.

You will be allocated to a trainee at the start of the trainee’s programme, and will be provided with an extract from the trainee’s application form to provide some background information.

Between weeks 3 and 6 of the training programme you should arrange for an introductory visit to meet the trainee and the School Based Tutor and to address any issues that they may have with Induction.

Your first monitoring visit should take place in the last 3 weeks of the first term. This visit is to monitor the induction process.

The second monitoring visit should take place in the last 3 weeks of the second term. This visit is to monitor the trainee’s progress in view of the Second Review Point.

The third and final visit should take place as early within the final half-term as practical. This visit is to ensure that the trainee is close to achieving Qualified Teacher Status.

An additional visit may take place during the second or third term, if appropriate. This should be agreed in advance with the Consortium.

It is important that you alert the trainee, SBT and Consortium of any issues as they arise.

You may also be invited to accompany the External Quality Assurance Advisor on the final Moderation visit.

You may also be invited to attend any External Examiner visit that takes place.

Once experienced as a QA Tutor, we anticipate that, as a Lead QAT, you will join the External Quality Assurance Advisor team with a particular role of conducting final moderations.
