Candidates with qualifications gained overseas must check their equivalency with UK NARIC (www.naric.org.uk) and obtain equivalency statements. Statements must clearly show that you meet the eligibility requirements.

When attending interview you will be asked to provide your original examination certificates.  Your application will not be considered if you cannot produce these certificates. Copies only of all certificates should be included with your application.

What does the programme involve?

The GTP is for highly motivated and organised individuals who can develop their own training structure alongside an agreed training plan. Once you are accepted onto the programme, we will discuss with you your individual training needs to achieve the standards for QTS. From this discussion a Training Plan will be agreed. The Training Plan could include guidance on classroom techniques; ways of preparing lessons; observing role models; discussing books and papers you have read; attending short courses or conferences; and practising your IT skills. Training will be mainly school based with opportunities for off-site group sessions. You will be supported by a School Based Tutor and experienced teachers monitor and assess your progress. You will need to have experience in at least two schools and across two Key Stages before you are awarded QTS.

How can I be sure of quality training?

Working with your lead school, we will provide the support and facilities you need. Your lead school will provide you with a School Based Tutor.  You will be continuously assessed throughout the programme against the standards for the award of QTS.  You will be expected to keep a portfolio of your own and your pupils’ best work. In the final stages of the programme, an independent external assessor will watch you at work, inspect your portfolio and talk to you and your School Based Tutor.

What happens at the end of training?

If the external assessor is satisfied, he or she will tell us and we can recommend you to the Secretary of State for Qualified Teacher Status. You also have to pass computerised skills tests in literacy, numeracy and information and communication technology (ICT). Like any other newly qualified teacher, you will work with your SBT to develop a Career Entry and Development Profile, which will help the school that employs you in the future to plan your induction training.

Will I be paid?

You will be employed by the Lead School as an Unqualified Teacher at an appropriate rate. Point 1 on the Unqualified Teacher Pay Scale is presently £15,816 (September, 2010).
