Vacancies for September 2012

What is the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) ?

The Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) is an employed, work-based training programme. The GTP offers you a way to qualify as a teacher while you work. With Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), you can work as a qualified teacher in any maintained school in England. The GTP is normally one year.  If you already have considerable teaching experience, it may be possible to take less time.  The minimum is one term.

What is a Recommending Body ?

Recommending Bodies (RBs) start as Designated Recommending Bodies (DRBs) and are inspected by Ofsted and recommended for accreditation by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). The RB takes responsibility for designing and delivering your training programme.  Most RBs and DRBs are partnerships of bodies such as schools, local authorities (LAs) and accredited initial teacher training (ITT) providers.

The Merseyside and Cheshire GTP Consortium is a RB partnership between Liverpool Hope and Liverpool John Moores Universities, the LAs of Cheshire East, Cheshire West & Chester, Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens Warrington and Wirral, the Liverpool City of Learning and many schools from the Merseyside and Cheshire area. The partnership was formed in the summer of 2002.

Can I get on the GTP programme ?

The programme suits people with some experience who want to change to a teaching career and need to continue earning while they train. The training is tailored to suit individual needs. GTP trainees are highly motivated individuals who are able to take responsibility for their own learning, and the training requires a high level of independent study in addition to work carried out in school. Entry to the GTP is highly competitive with places going to the best and most suitable applications in each of the TDA’s priority categories which are:

  • Secondary priority Subjects – Maths, Physics and Chemistry
  • Other secondary shortage subjects - Applied ICT, ICT, Applied Science, Modern foreign Languages, Design & Technology, Other Science, Engineering
  • high quality Primary applications;
  • high quality Secondary applications in any other subject.

If you have previously failed QTS, your application will not be considered.  You will be asked to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure with the Criminal Records Bureau when you are allocated a school.
